The power of the mala
Using a mala helps the mind to stay present.
It allows us to close our eyes and internalise and maintain an awareness on the number of repetitions we practice.
Traditionally the mala has 108 beads. Other common numbers are 11 and 27.
Any repetitive action has a calming and internalising effect. Without a mala our awareness can drift or we can even fall asleep We lose the conscious awareness of the practice.
The physical action of using a mala allows the mind to stay present. It allows us to access the deeper layer of the mind in a conscious way.
